Birdlife

The birdlife here reflects the variety that you’ll find anywhere in the Delta, and obviously depends heavily on the water levels. One recent checklist for NG33 and 34 lists 208 species, but doesn’t even pretend to be exhaustive.
However, the more common birds which are most frequently seen on the Gomoti floodplain and around the camp area include the long tailed and glossy starlings, from which the lodge takes its name; plus red-eyed, Cape turtle and mourning doves; blacksmiths and crowned plovers; long-tailed and crimson-breasted shrikes; red-billed quelias; buffalo weavers; lilac-breasted rollers, and white-backed and hooded vultures. Wattled cranes and paradise whydahs are also spotted periodically.
Meanwhile in the acacia woodlands, along with the ever-present doves, you’re likely to find kori bustards; large flocks of helmeted guinea fowl; red-billed and Swainson’ francolins; red- and yellow-billed hornbills; Meyer’s parrots; double-banded, Burchell’s, Namaqua and yellow-throated sandgrouse; plus the occasional Gabar goshawk, bataleur and ostrich.
