Scrub hare

Lepus saxatilis Shoulder height 45–60cm. Weight 1–4.5kg.
This is the largest and most common African hare or rabbit, occurring everywhere in Botswana. In some areas a short walk at dusk or after nightfall might reveal three or four scrub hares. They tend to freeze when disturbed.

Similar species
Very similar, the Cape hare (Lepus capensis) has been recorded in Botswana, both in the southwest and in an area to the north of the great salt pans. However, distinguishing between these two similar species at night, when they are most likely to be seen, would be very difficult.
