Getting there

By boat-taxi
The river's mouth is around 17km from Mpulungu, so adventurous backpackers can get private water-taxis to take them upstream to near the base of the falls, and then ask to be collected the following day. From there it is a strenuous climb to the top of the falls, where camping is allowed. You will need to bring all your own food and equipment.

A better option by far is to bring all your provisions and stay at one of the lodges nearer the Falls – Mishembe Bay or (if either is open) Kalambo or Isanga Bay. Then you can make a day-trip to the falls, perhaps even walking there.

Alternatively, small boats that ply between Mpulungu and Kasanga, in Tanzania, may drop you off one day, and pick you up on the next.

Driving
To get to Kalambo take the road to Zombe and the Tanzanian border from Mbala, then a few kilometres out of town the falls are clearly signposted to your left. The falls are about 33km from Mbala, and this track deteriorates towards the end. It's possible to get through with a 2WD vehicle, but only just.

Because of Kalambo's border position, policing it is difficult. Vehicles left unattended are likely targets for theft, so consider taking extra safety precautions, like having someone with you to look after the vehicle.
