Ntumbachushi Falls

These falls are very clearly signposted. They lie about 23km east of Mbereshi and 18km west of Kawambwa, and 20km from the valley turn-off. The track to them is good, and they are only about 3km south of the road.

These make a good spot to camp, and an ideal base from which to visit the many other waterfalls in the area. The main falls drop about 40m into a dark pool, with a second cataract alongside. Don't swim in the main pool, as there are strong currents and undertows that can pull you under the falls themselves. However, both the second cataract and the area above the first falls are ideal for a cooling dip or a proper swim. All around here you'll find some beautiful thick mishitu forest. There's a footpath the above-falls area of rapids. There's an entrance fee of Kw2,180 per person, Kw2,180 per car. Camping is possible and secure for no extra fee. There is said to be a further set of falls, the Witch Doctor's Falls (rainy season only), nearby, so-called because there used to be ng'anga shrines at its base, one containing millet, the other a model canoe carved from bone.
