Where to stay

If you're just passing through the park on the main Lusaka–Mongu road, then perhaps you might consider stopping for a night or two in the Mukambi/Chunga area – although if you have more time, then it's certainly worth penetrating deeper into the park. The southern Itezhi-Tezhi area, and around Ngoma, certainly has the most spectacular game on the southern side, whilst Kaingu Lodge is not only exceptionally promising, but also built beside a unique and very lovely part of the river.

If you're driving and taking camping kit then you can probably afford to turn up at the lodges in the Itezhi-Tezhi area and find somewhere that suits you. If you're arranging a fly-in trip, on a flexible budget, then there's nothing in southern Kafue which is perfect for what you want, though (again) Kaingu is probably the one to watch most closely, as it has the potential to be a good fly-in destination. The Nanzhila Plains were a great destination as late as the 1990s, but with the closing of the camps run by Chundukwa Adventures the area's tracks are beginning to fall into disuse, and its game is increasingly hard to find.

Considering the southern Kafue's camps, I'll split them up into three distinct areas: 'Near the Lusaka–Mongu Road', 'In the GMA' and 'Around Itezhi-Tezhi Dam and South'. Taking these area by area:

Near the Lusaka–Mongu Road

There are several choices on or very near the road, but for most people one of Mukambi's options is probably going to be the best bet.

Mukambi Safari Lodge
Mukambi Bushcamp
Mukambi Self-catering Campsite
Mukambi Houseboat
Chunga Safari Village
Njovu Safari Lodge

In the GMA

There are two lodges beside the river in the GMA. They're too far from the Mongu–Lusaka road to be mere stop-overs, and whilst the game is reasonable – the river is stunning!

Kaingu Lodge
Kaingu Campsite
Puku Pans safari Lodge
Puku Pans Campsite

Around the Itezhi-Tezhi dam and south

Grouped around the small village in the GMA, just east of the Itezhi-Tezhi dam wall, are three camps: all are fairly old-style places catering more to Zambian tastes than overseas visitors. They're not expensive – and some would regard them as good value.

New Kalala Camp
Wildlife Camp – David Shepherd Camp
Musungwa Safari Lodge
