What to see and do

The park is dominated by the Kafue Flats, which are flooded in the rainy season. This is certainly the best time for birdwatching here; and the park is generally at its best. In the dry season the view is not so stunning but still worth a visit.

The Critchleys built a causeway here that extends for about 5km over the marshy flats, enabling a vehicle to drive out on to the flats for a wonderful view of the stunning birdlife. There's even a turning circle at the end, and several memorial stones along this causeway. One reads:

Erica Critchley 1910–1976.
To the memory of the
one who loved Zambia
So much she cared for
human and natural resources.
Let what she stood for
not be forgotten by Zambians
especially by its youth.
Kenneth Kaunda
President of Zambia
March 30 1976

In the dry season the end of the causeway doesn't usually reach the water so you need a ranger from the scout post, who will take you on walks around the flats. Aside from the wildlife, do visit the old farmhouse that used to be owned by the Critchleys, even if you're not staying there. It's fascinating.
