The Kingdom

(296 rooms) PO Box 90, Victoria Falls; tel: +263 13 44275; fax: 44782
Adjacent to the Victoria Falls Hotel, the Kingdom is a large new hotel mirroring the Great Zimbabwe ruins. It is located on the site of the former Makasa Sun and is reminiscent of a small version of Sun City – a fun, fantasy hotel.

Expect dramatic architecture as you walk in: a large water feature mirroring the Falls. The rooms and entertainment areas surround a large artificial lake, complete with vegetation and waterfowl. The rooms all have en-suite facilities, with a view of the lake or the adjacent parkland. The hotel itself is divided into a 'Casino Wing' – which includes the (glitzy) casino, a food court and shops – and the 'Reception Wing', which incorporates an upstairs reception and conference room, and a downstairs open-plan breakfast area, overlooking two large swimming pools and an outside bar area.

The rooms are either lake-facing, which face inside, on to the bars and restaurants; or forest-facing, with a view outside the hotel. The lake-facing rooms are probably less peaceful, as they have a window on the evening's action below.

There are no hotel dining rooms, except for the breakfast hall. All other meals can be eaten in the many familiar food-chain restaurants, which are located in the food court. The hotel design is very open plan with high ceilings, wrought-iron work and a feeling of African outdoors. It's very impressive, and more than a little overwhelming.
