Livingstone to Lusaka

This main tar road is only 473km, but it seems longer. Despite its many sections which are faultlessly smooth, particularly as far as Mazabuka, there is the occasional rough patch, so allow about six or seven hours for the journey if you're driving yourself, and stick to a safe 80km/h or so. Better still, stop along the way and explore – making Choma's museum top of your list. If you've more time, then detour to Sinazongwe and on to one of Kariba's islands.

Those brave few hitchhikers will find it one of the easiest roads in the country: lots of towns, regularly spaced, and lots of traffic. The buses are frequent if you get stuck.

Here I've arranged a few brief comments on what you'll find if you're heading towards Lusaka from Livingstone, and suggestions for places to stay en route.
