Amaka Lodge

(18 rooms) 37 S Leopards Hill Lane, PO Box 34405, Kabulonga, Lusaka; tel/fax: 01 262868; cell: 097 821580
Started in mid-2003, Amaka Lodge was heading for an award for OTT décor when we visited. Amaka means 'power' in the Bemba language – and it's rather gone to the designer's head. Elaborate furnishings, deep-pile carpets, and heavy, ornate furniture are the hotel's hallmark, nowhere more so than in the formal lounge lined with large, plush armchairs and dominated by a huge TV at one end. En-suite rooms (some with bath, some with shower) get a similar treatment, with size dictating the grade (ordinary doubles are rather cramped); they also have AC, DStv, phone. There's a small restaurant, and outside is a plunge pool for guests. Four chalets are also under construction.
