Run by Beverley and John, this appealing out-of-town guesthouse was opened in 1998. Take the Kafue Rd for about 4km, go past the Castle shopping complex, then turn right on to Makeni Rd opposite Caltex. The Wayside is on the left about 2km from the main road.

It's clear that a lot of thought and hard work has gone into this attractive guesthouse, with its pretty flower gardens, well-tended lawns and hardwood mukwa doors. Along one side of the garden is a row of self-contained rooms. Each is furnished in pine with Zambian wall hangings and curtains of local fabric; amenities include a fan, fridge, facilities for making tea and coffee, and an en-suite bathroom; just one has a TV. A small TV lounge nearby is comfortable, and there's an attractive dining area too. In the garden, a large walled area hides a pool with garden chairs, while in another area is a self-contained cottage.
