Kafwala Camp

(5 two/three-bed huts) Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia. Book through the WECSZ branch in Kabwe – PO Box 80623, Kabwe; tel: 05 223467 or 224600; fax: 224859 – or via their head office in Lusaka.
This camp is built on the bank of the Kafue River in a stunning location, about 700m below the start of the Kafwala Rapids, northeast of the main bridge over the Kafue. Simply enter the park by turning north from the tar road on the western side of the main bridge, past the game scouts' checkpoint. Follow that dirt road about 44km northeast, then take the right turn which leads to Kafwala.

Access to the camp itself is restricted to members of the WECSZ, and it must be booked in advance. If you're thinking of staying here then join the society in Lusaka: it does a lot of good and needs more support.

Accommodation is in basic huts, and the rooms feel a little like dormitory rooms. There are a total of eleven beds: huts 1 and 2 have three beds each; hut 3 has two beds; hut 4 has just one bed; and there's a semi-open 'Breezeway' with two beds and limited privacy. Toilets, shower and bathroom are communal, as are the lounge and barbecue area.

Deep freezes, fridges, lamps, crockery, cutlery and bedding are all provided – but you must bring all your own food and drink. The camp's staff will cook for you, so don't forget to bring flour and yeast if you'd like some fresh bread. If you bring light fishing tackle then the cook will fillet and prepare your catch for dinner. The staff will also service the rooms, do the washing, and help with anything else that is reasonable. (You should tip them at the end of your stay.)
