Kiubo River Lodge

(8 twin-bed tents) Central reservations PO Box 35196, Northway 4065, Durban, South Africa; tel: +27 31 563 9774; fax: +27 31 564 1957; email: kiambi@karibu.co.za or KSL16@bushmail.net; www.karibu.co.za/lodges.asp
Sister camp to the Lower Zambezi River Camp, but considerably more upmarket, Kiubo is located just 16km from the national park, and about 50km from the pontoon, although most guests arrive by plane at the nearby Royal airstrip. The lodge is perhaps most notable for being at a point on the riverbank where the Zambezi Escarpment comes very close to the river, which makes a lovely scenic backdrop. Relaxed and friendly, it welcomes families with children.

Accommodation is in eight large Meru tents on wooden platforms right on the river, each with a shaded veranda and chairs. All tents have en-suite facilities with bath and shower and canvas roofs to shade them from the sun. Central to the lodge is a spacious thatched lounge/reception, with an adjacent dining area, sympathetically decorated with local fabrics and basketware, and furnished in teak. Beyond, there's a small plunge pool set in gardens by a stone terrace under a tamarind tree, with a small lower terrace under a large jackalberry tree set just above the river. The lodge relies on solar power, with paraffin lamps as back-up.

All the normal activities are on offer here, plus sunset and game-viewing cruises on the Zambezi, which afford the opportunity to experience the river in a more leisurely way than canoeing.
