Where to eat

If you're looking to splash out on an expensive meal, then the best restaurants are all in the hotels. More frugal travellers should seek a take-away in town, or cook for themselves.

Aside from take-aways, most within two minutes' walk of the Wimpy and around the shopping arcade beside Shearwater, there is a good variety of places to eat, for all tastes and budgets. Popular and reasonably priced restaurants/take-aways include Mama Africa, Wimpy, Park Avenue, and a wide selection of choices at the Kingdom Hotel.

The most impressive hotel restaurant is the Livingstone Room at the Victoria Falls Hotel, which serves classic European dishes, à la carte, in a formal jacket-and-tie atmosphere. You'll understand why Laurens van der Post donned his dinner jacket here. Lunches, outside on the terrace, are exceptional, and more affordable for a similar level of luxury. Ilala Lodge also has an excellent restaurant, serving a variety interesting dishes like crocodile thermador. Dining is inside or al fresco.

Further out of town, the Elephant Hills and the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge both have good restaurants, in keeping with their different styles. The Safari Lodge's bar is the best place for a drink at sundown, as the animals all come to the waterhole.
