River-boarding

For a more up-close and personal encounter with the Zambezi rapids, adrenaline junkies can try their hand at river-boarding (also known as boogie-boarding). Bundu and Safari Par Excellence both offer daily trips down the Zambezi from Zambia.

After donning your flippers, lifejacket and helmet, you and your foam board (the size of a small surfboard) will have an opportunity to 'surf' the big waves of the Zambezi, after being taught basic skills in a calmer section of the river. A raft accompanies each trip and takes you downstream to the best spots of the day. Here you can try your hand at finding the best 'standing waves' where you can stay still and surf as the water rushes beneath you. Experts can stand, but most will surf on their stomachs.

Thrilling for the fit who swim strongly, but not for the faint of heart. Trips are fully inclusive of transfers, Zambia day visa, a light breakfast, lunch and sundowners.

Rates: US$125 per person, fully inclusive
