No mention of the South Luangwa would be quite complete without a word for the old Chinzombo, which stood just south of Kapani. It had a respected history as one of the valley's first safari camps, but over the last 10-15 years it had deteriorated badly. The very ground on which it stood was being eroded (about 3–5m of riverbank would disappear per year into the floodwaters), but more importantly its standards seemed to be slipping even faster. Recently it closed, though look out for the name as it might easily reappear!
