Jollyboys

(8 chalets, 40 dorm beds, camping) 34 Kanyata Rd, PO Box 61088, Livingstone; tel/fax: 03 324229; email: jollybs@zamnet.zm; www.backpackzambia.com
In 2003, the ever-popular Jollyboys moved to new and improved premises to the west of Mosi-oa-Tunya Rd, just behind the museum, a two-minute walk from the town centre. Now run by the friendly and helpful Kim and Sue, its reputation as the quintessential backpackers' lodge remains undimmed. The new, purpose-built complex has eight individual thatched chalets (6 double/twins and 2 double en-suite) in the back garden where there is also ample camping space. The main facilities are set within a large, central thatched quadrangle, with the dorms, reception area and ablutions around the perimeter. Four 6-bed dorm rooms and one 16-bed dorm all share a well-sized toilet and shower block with endless hot water. In the middle of this 'quad' is a wonderful sunken lounge with fire pit and pillows – a perfect spot to chill out, read and meet fellow travellers, while above is a wooden deck from which you can see the spray from the Falls. A pool table, table tennis and sitting area are also under cover looking out to an enticing rock swimming pool, lawns and gardens. Adjacent are the open-plan bar and restaurant where you can sip a cold beer (or several) and enjoy a home-cooked meal at reasonable prices. There's also a separate kitchen for those who wish to self-cater. Secure parking is part of the package and a laundry service is available. Kim and Sue offer first-hand advice on what to see and do, and can book any and all activities. There are free lifts to the Falls at 10.00 daily. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, though sometimes too busy to allow much peace and quiet.
