Chundukwa River

(4 tree-house chalets) PO Box 61025, Livingstone; tel/fax: 03 324452, +263 11 221731; email: chundukwa@zamnet.zm
Owned and run by Doug Evans, who also runs mobile safaris Thoughout Zambia, this is the base for Chundukwa adventure trails. The lodge is roughly 22km out of Livingstone, on the Kazungula rd beyond natural mystic. It has two twin-bedded chalets, one double chalet and one larger two-bedroom family cottage (with double and twin rooms) – all in a quasi tree-house style. each is divided in two: the thatch-and-reed open-fronted bedroom (with balcony) perches on stilts amongst the waterberry trees above the river, whilst the private toilets and showers are just a few yards away (over a wooden walkway) on the riverbank (for environmental reasons). a novel design; using rustic beams and branches, it's simple but well done.

A small thatched boma and lounge area next to the river, where meals are served, is a peaceful spot to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, and there's a lovely swimming pool overlooking the river.

Activities from the lodge include kayaking (in 2-man kayaks, accompanied by a guide in a single kayak), horseriding (using McLelen-type, American saddles), boat trips and island excursions. Doug is an experienced guide of some repute, so the activities that Chundukwa offers are done well. Other local activities and excursions can be booked at the lodge.
